When hearing "surgery," you might immediately picture a tense operating room with a surgeon performing carefully while a nurse wipes sweat from their brow. There are some risky surgeries, but the majority aren't as extreme.
The latter category includes dental implant surgery. We make incisions and change tissue to make room for the implant. It's more demanding than having a tooth surgically removed.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants in Irving are placed into the jawbone using a procedure called implant surgery. The exact placement of each implant is based on the characteristics of each patient to ensure optimal results. When placed in the jawbone, dental implants become part of the natural structure of your mouth, making them virtually undetectable from an outside (cosmetic) view.
What to Expect Before, During, and After Dental Implant Surgery
Pre Planning
Because it is well planned out in advance, implant surgery is typically a routine procedure. We frequently use CT scanners or other advanced imaging to map out the implant location, detect potential problems like nerves, blood arteries, and sinus cavities, and confirm adequate bone to support an implant. With this knowledge, we can design a surgical strategy or oral placement guide that precisely puts the implant.
A preliminary appointment with DR. AJ Nguyen marks the start of the therapeutic procedure. He will assess your suitability for treatment and talk with you about your general and dental health during this session because both have an impact on the care you receive and the potential results.
Site Prep
Before the procedure, we will numb the entire work area with a local anesthetic. We'll start by exposing the bone and making a tiny gum incision. Then, utilizing the surgical plan or guide, we'll make a small channel for the implant and gradually increase it with drilling until we get the implant's ideal fit.
You could require a bone graft or sinus lift if your bone density is insufficient for dental implants. These treatments are done before placing dental implants, but if a small amount of bone is needed, it can be possible to do them at the same time.
Implant Placement
After drilling the channel to our satisfaction, we will take the implant out of its sterile packing and insert it into the channel. The gum tissue will be sutured back after any necessary changes, and the proper location has been confirmed using X-rays.
Through tiny incisions in gums, dental implants are surgically inserted into your jawbone. While placing several dental implants will take a little longer, placing a single dental implant takes around an hour. Kudo Care in Irving, TX, can offer repairs needed after surgery. Until your new implant teeth are ready to be fitted, you can utilize these temporary teeth while you heal.
After Surgery
You might feel some mild to moderate soreness, but this is typically treatable with over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If harsher medication is required, we can prescribe it if necessary. We could also suggest an anti-bacterial mouthwash to lower the chance of infection.
Once implants are placed, they must have time to osseointegrate, or bind, with the surrounding bone. To promote the development of new bone cells, an implant post is used. The implant post will become fused into the jawbone and immobile as bone tissue develops on and around it. After osseointegration is finished, visit our dental office to have your new teeth created and fitted.
